Medical & Recreational Marijuana

Joe was an early supporter of medical marijuana. No one should have to uproot their family to access medicine that could provide relief to a child. Joe also supports recreational marijuana. But let's make sure we do it right.

MEDICAL

Joe was an early supporter of medical marijuana. In 2015, Joe and Senator Kenny Yuko sent a letter to their Republican and Democratic colleagues encouraging the discussions that became Ohio’s new medical marijuana law.

As two supporters of medical marijuana, we are available and willing to collaborate with all stakeholders interested in this cause. Together, we can assist the many Ohio families who are searching for ways to alleviate the pain of chronic and debilitating diseases.” –Senators Joe Schiavoni and Kenny Yuko

Joe then cosponsored Senator Yuko’s bill to legalize medical marijuana in Ohio and create a program to grow, produce, and distribute this medical product to patients seeking care for many chronic and debilitating illnesses and injuries.

Joe was motivated to support medical marijuana after speaking to families who were being forced to leave Ohio to seek medical marijuana for their children who suffered from severe seizures. No one should have to uproot their family to access medicine that could provide relief to a child.

RECREATIONAL

Joe would be in favor of legalizing recreational marijuana for personal use. This new industry would provide needed funding to our state and allow police to focus resources on more pressing matters. But we need to do it properly.

For example, we need to make sure the money this new industry generates is directed at something specific, such as Ohio’s education system. It should not just go to the state and disappear.

As governor, Joe would be open to working to experts, community leaders, law enforcement, and many others to explore ways to approach this issue responsibly.
